Create and customise the perfect button storage for you!

Create and customise the perfect button storage for you!

Ever wonder how to store buttons so you can save time… rather than rooting around in metal biscuit tins like our Mums and Grandmas did? Using a few tips and your own creativity, you can create an easy-to-use button storage system that will save you time and energy while looking for that special button in your craft or sewing room. Let’s get started.

Finding what button storage system works best for you

First of all, not all button storage areas and systems are created equal. Are you a crafter? Or do you have an elaborate sewing area? Or perhaps you have very random needs, like trying to find that matching button that came with a jacket because one fell off and got lost? You get to decide if you are looking to create a button storage area you have access to all the time, or if you simply need a small system tucked away for when you require it once in a while.

Create your custom button storage area

Customisation is the key. Here are few simple suggestions.

Are you into DIY? Get your buttons organised using whatever you have around the house you can re-use as your button storage. Inside a shelving unit, box, or drawer you can use:

  • separate small jars
  • muffin tins
  • spice rack
  • baby food jars
  • repurposed jewellery boxes
  • fishing tackle plastic storage organiser box with removable dividers
  • office supply small plastic bins or boxes
  • sew them on to old button cards so they do not get lost

Or you can get organised by purchasing something you might find on a work bench— a small craft or hardware storage cabinet drawer organiser. These don’t have to cost much – check our your local dollar store or thrift store and see what you can find. Either way… make it your own.

Staying Organised

Once you have the right space and containers, you can choose HOW to store buttons so that they stay organised. Sort by colour? Size? New vs. used? Style or type? Custom design your button storage top to bottom. Make it easy to use and have fun! One cool idea is to store them in bundles: if you have lots of identical buttons, simply thread a piece of string though them all then tie loosely at the end. This way you won’t be searching for them for ages.
