How to clean vinyl flooring – gently, but thoroughly

How to clean vinyl flooring

Vinyl flooring is easy to clean, which is why it’s so popular in many homes. Unfortunately, it doesn’t clean itself, so in order to make sure your vinyl floor is spotless and stays this way for a long time, we have a few vinyl floor care tips for you!

Step by step for cleaning your vinyl floor

If you want to clean your vinyl floor properly, you will need a vacuum cleaner, a cleaning product like Soft Scrub® All Purpose Cleanser, a mop, and possibly a soft sponge. In addition to specific floor cleaners, mild all-purpose, glass or neutral cleaners and vinegar can also be used as cleaning agents.

  • Cleaning while dry
The first step is to get rid of loose dirt, dust, and crumbs. It is best to use a soft broom or the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner.
  • Removing stubborn stains
Pre-treating stubborn stains is a good idea. Apply a little Soft Scrub® directly to the stain using a sponge and let the whole thing work in a little. Then simply wipe with a damp cloth.
  • Cleaning while damp
The best way to damp clean your vinyl floor is to use warm water with a dash of liquid dish soap. Be sure to wring out the mop well before use. Although vinyl flooring usually doesn't mind a bit of moisture, too much of it and it could cause the floor to swell.
  • The final touch – polishing
By wiping the floor with clear water and a shot of vinegar, you prevent streaks from forming on the floor.

How to care for vinyl flooring

Vinyl floors are very easy to care for and even though they might survive many accidents, they will eventually show signs of wear. If your vinyl floor has lost its shine or if there are stains that cannot be removed, the only option might be to do a deep cleaning. You will need a cleaning agent of your choice, a mop or wiper, and a scrubbing brush. Make sure that the bristles are not too hard. Mix the dish soap with warm water, apply the mixture to the floor, and leave it to work for at least 15 minutes. Then it’s time for some elbow grease: use a brush to loosen any stuck-on dirt. Afterwards, remove the dirt with the mop and wipe the floor again with clean water and a dash of vinegar. It is recommended to apply a sealer after deep cleaning. Use sealer according to manufacturer’s directions and block the area from children and pets.

Protect the floor with a sealer

It is best to clean the vinyl floor properly right after you’ve installed it and then use a sealer on it. Special vinyl care products or impregnation products are best for this. This ensures that your vinyl floor is protected against dirt and stains from the very beginning, although the sealer does need reapplying every so often. It makes sense to re-impregnate the floor at least after every deep clean. To do this, apply a thin layer of sealant to the floor and then once again after two hours have passed. Different products are applied in different ways so always follow the product label for instructions.

Easy to clean and long-lasting

Vinyl floors are very robust, however, they still need a little maintenance every now and then. By cleaning your vinyl floor regularly and sealing the surface every now and then, you can ensure that it looks good for as long as possible. Tip: Make sure you vacuum or sweep the vinyl floor regularly and install felt gliders under heavy furniture. This will prevent scratches and dents on the floor.
