Pomegranates are a crunchy, juicy, and delicious little treat. They boast plenty of health and nutritional benefits and are a good source of vitamin C and antioxidants. But they’re difficult to peel and open. Most of those who’ve tried to previously learn how to peel a pomegranate have ended up making a right mess of their kitchen when getting the juicy red seeds! Ready to eat some pomegranate but have no idea where to begin to cut open a pomegranate? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Cutting, opening and deseeding the fruit couldn’t be easier with our top tips and tricks.

You’ll need:

  • A cutting board
  • A good sharp knife
  • Pomegranate
  • A bowl
  • A wooden spoon

How to open a pomegranate easily

  1. Cut off the top. After you place your fruit on the cutting board, start by cutting around the top. Be careful that the knife doesn’t go too deep. Focus on cutting away the skin only and leave the seeds unharmed.
  2. Lift off the top. You can then gently lift the top lid off and should be looking at plenty of seeds packaged into roughly four compartments beneath.
  3. Identify the compartments and then cut along them. The way you’ll want to cut open a pomegranate is by making four deep incisions at each outline. But leave the
  4. Pry apart the pomegranate using your hands. This should be fairly easy now that you’ve made the cuts along the outside. Everything should be nice and loose for you to pry apart. But be careful not to rip off the bottom.
  5. Turn the pomegranate upside down above your bowl. You’ll want the seeds to be pointing down into the bowl. Use your wooden spoon and hit each of the four compartments from the outside. The seeds should be dropping into the bowl. You can avoid a mess by making sure you use a bowl that’s deep enough. In this way, the juice will splash against the outside of the bowl.
  6. Continue to hit the pomegranate until all (or most of) the seeds are in the bowl.
  7. If any of the white bits have also come off, now’s the time to pick them out.
