Heat from below, water and grease from above: Glass stove tops have to withstand quite a lot. Our guide will show you how to clean and care for the hob surface regularly and how to easily remove stubborn dirt and grime.

Cleaning a hob regularly

When cooking, there’s always a pan that ends up boiling over. Salted pasta or vegetable water, milk, or fat can splash out of the pan during frying and leave stubborn stains on the stove top. Regardless of the degree of dirt and whether only water or more has boiled over, it is best to get used to cleaning a hob whenever you have used the stove. For loose dirt and light stains, it is sufficient to let the hob cool down and then wipe it with a soft, damp cloth. By the way, cleaning the hob weekly is a good preventative method to help keep your kitchen space clean and tidy. Making your kitchen more efficient will also help to make those household chores easier to manage.

The right cleaner for your stove tops

While salted water that has boiled over often leaves white edges and stains, sauces or milk can cause really stubborn, burnt-on crusts. But don't worry, there is a remedy for every stain. Multi-surface cleaning products are tough on stains yet gentle on most delicate surfaces. Regardless of whether you are cleaning a glass hob or are cleaning a gas hob.

  • There is one thing you should avoid at all costs when water and the like have boiled over: Using scouring liquids or pads when cleaning a glass hob. The abrasive particles contained within the solution and/or pad could scratch the surface.
  • After you have worked your magic with the special cleaner, wipe the surface with clear water and dry the stove top with a soft cloth. Voilà, done.

Use a glass scraper to get rid of dried-on residue

Getting nowhere with wet cleaning, or grease and food residue is getting difficult to remove? Then there is another secret weapon for cleaning a glass hob: The glass or ceramic stove top scraper. Visually it looks a bit like a cutter knife, and in fact the most important element is the blade at the front. You place it on the hob and use it to scrape dried-on food residue from the smooth surface. The following applies:

  • The steeper the angle, the more effective the scraper.
  • For loose stains, such as when water has boiled over, it is sufficient to place the scraper at a very flat angle.
  • For really baked-on stains, it can help to soak them a bit in advance with a solution of dishwashing liquid and water.
  • After using the scraper, you can wipe off the loosened dirt with a damp cloth and clean the stove top as described above.
